Bad Movies
Both Pete and Chuck were discussing bad movies earlier this week. A day late I throw my random thoughts into the ring. Using Pete's methodology makes this a bit difficult since it requires seeing the whole movie. With the uber cable that I have with the multitude of movie channels, seldom do I sit through a bad movie when flipping channels randomly is also an option. I go to movies in the theater rarely enough that I usually use some care in selecting them. Most of the movies on Chuck and Pete's list, I can't comment on since I simply avoided them completely or as in the case of Soul man 3 minutes of viewing was enough to make me feel the need to wash my eyes out. As it turns out two of the movies that I have come up with were ones I saw while trapped on an airplane.
8. Kingpin Thoroughly nasty movie from the hand in the ball return on.
7. Lost in Space. The first of the movies I watched because I was on a plane. Got to agree with Chuck that this one was truly awful.
6. Howard the Duck. Okay this is a trite answer, but it truly was really, really bad and as discussed below Lea Thompson's appearance could not redeem it.
5. Batman & Robin. The second movie I "watched" on a plane. This one is a little bit of a cheat since after about 20 minute I took the earphones out of my ears because it was so painful to listen to. I am counting it though because the screen was right above my face and the images seared into my brain.
4. Amos & Andrew. The appearance of Dabney Coleman is usually a pretty good sign a movie is going to be one I dislike. I should have known better than to go see this movie, but I got suckered in by a joke that made me laugh in the commercial. That was the only funny joke and it wasn't funny when I actually saw the movie.
3. Perfect. Jamie Lee Curtis and John John Travolta in a movie about an expose of sex in Health clubs. It was one of the many slayers of Travolta's career. I saw this movie when it first came out and since then it has set my bench mark for bad movies, leading to the question: is it worse than Perfect?
2. There's Something About Mary. Technically this does not meet Pete's criteria since I did laugh once in this movie at the cameo at the end. But the physical pain I felt through most of the rest of the movie means that it deserves to be on this list.
1. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I hated this movie. I hated, hated, hated this movie. It took everything that was good about the first movie and exaggerated it to the point of absurdity. As I think about it, I still hate this movie and I have not seen it in almost twenty years.
Well that is 8 not 10 , but that is all I can up with right now.
Quo Vadis (1951) deserves to be on this list, but I did not make it through anywhere near the three hour run time. Last Tango in Paris also probably deserves to be on the list for the mere fact that a movie about sex could make me fall asleep.
In thinking about the list of movies, I did contemplate the question of whether the nudity of an acttress one finds very attractive is enough unto itself to remove a movie from contention. For example Hot Spot (with Jennifer Connelly) Casual Sex (Lea Thompson) All the Right Moves (Lea Thompson) and Howard the Duck (Lea Thompson, not even nude) (okay in writing this it is quite clear that 1. I had a thing for Lea Thompson at one point and 2. she was in some truly awful movies)
And for truly the worst movie I ever saw just in absolute terms was When Women Lost their Tails. The first movie in the series When Woman had tails was at least shot outside, which was good since it was a caveman picture. The second one was shot in a sound stage, that looked like a sound stage.
